What Will My Crown Be Made Of?

The materials we use to make crowns are designed to stand the test of time and look almost identical to natural tooth enamel.

Some of the materials used include:

• Ceramic: This is a favourable material for teeth most visible when you smile, as it’s exceptionally tooth-like.
• Metal Alloy: a combination of metals that may be used for teeth that do a lot of the hard work when you chew and bite. Metal alloy crowns are most suited to these teeth because of their durability and aesthetic, which is not as pleasing as porcelain.
• Combination of Metal Alloy and Ceramic: these crowns have two layers. The metal layer acts as the structure for the tooth, whilst the ceramic is placed over the top, providing the aesthetic. The metal base has a high resistance to wear, and the ceramic matches the shade of your natural teeth.

How Durable Are Crowns?

Crowns can last several years as long as you look after them properly. The great thing about crowns is they don’t require any special care. You can brush them just like your regular teeth, and you don’t need to visit the dentist for any crown-specific care (unless they become damaged).

If your crown sits on the top of an implant, you must be extra careful to brush thoroughly (but gently) around the implant site.
